CTB AWARDS JEFFERSON PARK AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT
$5.8 million contract expected to be under construction within 60 days
CULPEPER — The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded construction of the Jefferson Park Avenue bridge replacement project in the city of Charlottesville to R.R. Dawson Bridge Co., LLC, of Lexington, Ky. The firm’s $5,846,285.05 bid was the lowest of 11 bids on the project.
Construction of the project, which will replace the current bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad, should begin within 60 days. During construction of the new bridge pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be maintained across the railroad tracks using a temporary bridge. The project has a fixed completion date of August 24, 2012.
The current bridge was built before 1932, is in deteriorated condition and is posted for a 8-ton weight limit, which means that fire trucks and other emergency equipment cannot cross it. The city transit service is limited to small buses on routes that cross the bridge due to the weight limit.
The new bridge will be 67 feet wide with travel lanes built to current standards as well as dedicated bike lanes and a sidewalk to accommodate the significant pedestrian traffic that uses the bridge to cross the railroad right of way.
JVNA President Candace Carey will be acting as liasion and if anyone has questions or concerns regarding this project, please contact Candace, and she will pass them along to the construction team:
